Tales of the Water Guppy
The sun was high on the horizon as three goblins sailed into the distance.
“So, then I cut the ropes loose, grabbed the tiller, and the rest is history,” said a scrappy goblin as he hopped around the small keelboat. Uk was the youngest of the three and, at only 2 feet of height, he was also the least impressive.
“When we bag us a whale, we’re gunna be rich," said a middle-aged goblin perched on the bowsprit. "Then we can buy this boat from under the owner.” Smak looked into the distance with his pike held out ready to strike.
“Right, as long as we live through this, we’ll be rich,” said Izzy, an aged goblin seated at the tiller rubbing the salt spray from his eyes.
The trio sailed for a few hours, each blaming the other’s lack of experience, misguided navigation, or poor eyesight for their lack of success when, in the distance, a spout erupted from the water. With excitement, the three turned the ship and plotted a course for the spot of the spout.
“Holy gods, what is that thing?!” Uk shouted, jumping and pointing at an enormous creature beneath the waves. The monster slammed its bulk into the flank of the ship, splitting planks and sending the goblins reeling. Leveling his crossbow, Izzy fired and a bolt went sailing into the water.
“Nice shot old man,” Uk shouted as he fumbled and dropped his javelin into the water.
Eager as ever, Smak closed an eye, stuck out his tongue, and let a javelin fly. It struck true and a cloud of blood erupted as the monster reared its head out of the water and struck out at Smak. It missed, but hit the bowsprit hard, causing Smak to lose his balance and tumble into the water. The battle continued with Uk hurriedly throwing javelins and Izzy firing bolt after bolt from his crossbow.
The sea monster's head snaked by just as Smak finally climbed aboard. Uk, seeing his opportunity, struck out with his cutlass and scored a solid blow to the monster’s flank, but drew its attention. Spitting sea water, the monster struck out at Uk and caught his chest, tearing a massive gash in the young goblin’s flesh and dropping him to the deck. Disoriented by the commotion and hoping to score a shot on the monster’s head Izzy fired a bolt at the thing. Unfortunately, just as Smak stood up to face the beast once more, he took a crossbow bolt in the back from a misfire by Izzy and he fell to the deck of the ship as well, bleeding out.
“Oh no,” Izzy whispered, as he hastily reloaded his crossbow. The monster circled the small boat, ramming it again and again. Wood cracked and water began leaking in as Izzy repeatedly fired, hoping he would at least deter the beast. Between shots, he gazed at his friends, hoping they would come to. The monster’s head silently rose from the water behind him. Izzy turned again to the water, searching for the beast.
Suddenly, he heard a roaring hiss and smelled the fetid stink of the creature’s breath as the monster’s head -- as big as the goblin’s entire body -- opened its massive jaws and clamped down around Izzy’s abdomen. The creature tossed its head back as Izzy’s limbs flailed wildly and clawed at the mouth, trying to escape. The monster snapped its jaws a few times, stabbing and crushing Izzy’s small body, and swallowed him whole.
